Why I threw my dream away so I could make money instead

February 23, 2015

Now before you think I'm a sell out, allow me to explain myself!

My mom said the most striking thing:  she didn’t go to university because she knew a college degree would get her a corporate job where the ceiling income would be about 100K/year.

Some people might think: “wow, I would only DREAM to make that much a year!”

But my mom had very clear intentions. She said making 100k/year was incongruent with her life plan because she planned to be a millionaire.

Do you think that sounds arrogant?

Tony Robbins teaches us about STRIVING for  an EXTRAORDINARY QUALITY of life for ourselves.

Think about it: the most successful people out there are OUTRAGEOUSLY SUCCESSFUL because they have the AMBITION, the DRIVE, and the AUDACITY to go after what they want.

They DEMAND excellence. NO SHAME.

In 2012 at Tony's Date With Destiny Conference in Palm Springs, I had a painful epiphany. I was in the second year of my Master's Thesis. I realized that my life path I chose (studying theatre) would not lead me to the extraordinary quality of life that I desired.

I did my Bachelors and Master's degree in Canada, Belgium & France. I loved every minute of it. But at the end of it, I realized…

SHIT... I don't want to be a starving artist.

I don't want to just "get by"

I had the painful realization that I couldn't make the money I want if I continue down this path.

YES I am passionate about the arts.

and YES I am passionate about making money.

----- See how the two could appear conflicting???-----

So I found myself in a similar situation like my mom. The path I was on was INCONGRUENT to my life plan.

I am crazy multi passionate / ADD. There’s a TON of things I want to do in my life. One thing at a time.

Like most post-graduates, I WAS LOST for about 7 months after my Master's degree.

I knew I had talent, I knew I had passion, I knew I had skills....But I hadn’t yet thought of how to monetize them.

I waitressed for 10 months while building my business. A business that combines a few of my passions: communication, art, design, public relations.

As my situation became more stable, I saw more doors opening up. I got in contact with people in the FILM industry.

OF COURSE! This was it. Actually, I knew it all along because my whole life a voice was whispering it to me. ( in fact, in the past 6 years, the voice was even screaming at me!) But I kept ignoring it and making up excuses.

I didn’t want to struggle.

I wasn’t OPEN to the possibility so I rejected the path.

In the past 6 months, I’ve worked on 3 film sets. I now have the money to finance my own films.

My business allows me this freedom.

Don’t get my wrong, I love love love my business.

Fabiola Giordani quotes in my eBook something from Oprah:

“you can have it all, just not at one time”

I CAN have it all and I am creating it ONE step at a time.

I am hustling my little bum off.

As I am learning now, writing a screenplay, hiring a team, casting actors in my own short film is just simply the most fulfilling thing ever. I freakin’ LOVE what I do.

Being multi-passionate is an asset because it allows me to develop skills in a ton of areas. But I've had to learn to focus on ONE thing at a time!

Half my time is spent networking, creating relationships with people and just getting my foot in the door.

I am learning to ENJOY THE JOURNEY.

I am learning to live COMFORTABLY even in a state of incertitude.

When you're in business YOU HAVE TO LOVE THE HUSTLE.

So, the moral of the story... Did I really throw my dream away so I could make money?

Well, actually no! I took a detour, but I ended up making it exactly where I belong! Everything I was going through was preparing me for where I am today!
